Aisha Adow Farole, a resilient 45-year-old woman from Mogadishu, exemplifies how determination and opportunity can transform a modest idea into a thriving business. As the head of a family of eight, Aisha faced significant challenges before receiving financial support from RAAS MFI.
Path to Empowerment
Aisha operates a small fruit shop, selling mangoes, watermelons, and bananas. Prior to securing financing, she struggled with cash shortages and had limited access to purchase directly from farmers. Instead, she worked with middlemen who supplied her with fruits. This arrangement meant that Aisha had to pay back the principal to the middleman after each sale, resulting in minimal profit, insufficient to cover her family's expenses.
Impact After Lending
- Sales Growth: Before receiving financing, Aisha’s daily sales averaged only $20. After obtaining a loan, her daily sales increased significantly to $45, leading to a daily income of approximately $9. This financial boost has allowed her to better support her family.
- Job Creation: Aisha has expanded her business operations by hiring her sister to help manage the increasing workload, thereby creating a job opportunity within her family.
- Loan Discipline and Leadership: Aisha has positioned herself as one of RAAS MFI’s most reliable clients. She consistently repays her loans on time, maintains a positive relationship with MFI staff, and actively encourages fellow women to leverage financial services for their own empowerment.
- Enhanced Family Well-being: Aisha’s daily expenses have increased from $3 to $7, reflecting her improved business success. Before receiving the loan, only two of her children were enrolled in school; she has since expanded this to four, showcasing her commitment to investing in her family’s future.
Looking Ahead
Upon completing her initial loan, Aisha applied for $1,000 and successfully repaid it, which allowed her to secure an additional $2,000 loan. She is currently maintaining regular payments and is poised for further growth.
